September 2023 Update

By: The Spatial Team

“Tempus Fugit” - one of my favorite Yes songs in our newsletter today. The guys just got back from visiting with industry icons Ron (New Record Day) and Danny (GR Research) in Texas. Ron and Danny are a fountain of knowledge on a variety of subjects. From speakers to amplifiers to electric guitars, cars, website development, video production… More on that in future updates :)

In development news -

Q6 Final Design is still pending. The prototype at Pacific Audio Fest was really good and we had a lot of positive feedback. But, we knew we could make it better and that’s what we have been working on. In this case, we are sweating the details to get every bit of performance we can but still be at a reasonable price point in the market.

300B Monoblocks and Preamplifier (Revelation Series) have been finalized and parts are being ordered. One of the big decisions that had to be made was whether to continue with the Toroidy or change to a more expensive option from Monolith Magnetics. The decision had to be based on performance and if the increased cost was justified. (We also really like the look of Toroidy.) In the end, Don and Lynn thought it was the right thing to do. The footprint of the monoblocks has increased as well - 17-in wide to accommodate some larger components and ensure airflow for proper cooling. We should have everything for initial production in 6 weeks which means shipping in early December.

Equipment Platforms were on the back burner but will be available soon. Waiting on the IsoAcoustics feet and then we can take some photos and put them up on the website. And, yes, they will be sized to look good with the new amplifiers.

Other fun stuff -

Music - What do you listen to when you want to test the performance of your audio setup?

I asked Sam and he came up with a number of examples as well as what he likes about those tracks. While these may not be to everyone’s specific musical taste, they definitely offer an opportunity to showcase different characteristics you may also appreciate.

  • Soundstage - Glitch Mob, “Keep on Breathing (Feat. Tula)” - listen for instrument decay and layers of sound
  • Instrument Separation - Daft Punk, “Motherboard” - each instrument has it’s own sound and should not bleed into others
  • Instrument Placement - Tool, “Fear Innoculum” - if you find yourself looking for the invisible drum kit or solo guitarist you know what I mean
  • Tonality - Nils Lofgren, “Keith Don’t Go” - the guitar strings and vocals come alive
  • Bonus - stress test - Polyphia, “Playing God” - this can be a tough one for many systems to keep up with. There is a lot going on that can get smeared unless your system can offer balanced mix of the above.

I think we were one of the only rooms at PAF to take requests from the attendees when demonstrating our room setup. (You never know what you care going to get - I learned that Dr. House, aka Hugh Laurie, is quite the jazz musician!) If you have some favorite go-to music you think we should hear, drop us a line and let us know what it is and what you think the track should be telling us if it’s done right - supportteam@spatialaudiolab.com

We will showcase some of these in a future newsletter.
